How we rank
Every list starts with every business in its category across San Diego County. We remove places that are closed, unverifiable or have too few reviews to judge, then score the rest on review quality weighted by review volume. That means years of consistent praise from hundreds of customers counts for more than a handful of perfect scores. Specialty businesses get their own lists, so a jiu-jitsu academy competes with other academies, not with big-box gyms, and each brand appears once per list.
Then we do the part an algorithm can’t: we research the finalists and write about them — what makes each one stand out, who it’s best for and what to know before you go.
Our independence policy
Rankings are never for sale. No business can pay to join a best-of list, move up a list or change what we write about it. Some businesses buy clearly labeled Sponsored placements, which appear above a list and are never part of the ranking. Business owners can claim their free listing to correct details and add photos, but claiming never affects rank.
