How to choose a dog-friendly hike in San Diego

Plenty of San Diego’s trails welcome leashed dogs, from Cowles Mountain and the trails of Mission Trails Regional Park to coastal and lagoon paths across North County. Some of the most famous hikes don’t allow dogs at all: Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, for example, prohibits dogs on its trails.

Pick shaded, shorter routes in summer, start early, and match the climb to your dog’s age and fitness.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Check the trail’s dog rules before you drive out. Leashes are required on most trails.
  • Carry water for your dog. Many trails have none.
  • Avoid midday heat: exposed trails get hot fast, even in spring and fall.
  • Watch for rattlesnakes from spring through fall, and keep dogs on the trail.
  • Check paws and ears for foxtails afterwards. These grass seeds are a common cause of vet visits in Southern California.

How we ranked San Diego's best dog-friendly hikes

We started with every listing in San Diego County that is open and verifiable, then scored each one on review quality weighted by review volume, so a perfect score from a handful of visitors can't outrank years of consistent praise. Rankings are editorial and never for sale; paid placements are clearly labeled Sponsored and sit outside the ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog to Torrey Pines?

Dogs are not allowed on the trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Leashed dogs are welcome on many other trails, including Cowles Mountain and much of Mission Trails Regional Park.

What is the best time to hike with a dog in San Diego?

Early morning, especially from late spring through fall. Trails and pavement heat up quickly, and dogs overheat faster than people.

What are foxtails and why do they matter?

Foxtails are barbed grass seeds that can work their way into a dog’s paws, ears and nose. Check your dog after every hike, especially from spring to fall.
