Legion American Jiu Jitsu San Diego – HQ

Why it made the list

Legion American Jiu-Jitsu is the academy of Keenan Cornelius, one of the most recognizable competitors of his generation, who opened it on Miramar Road in late 2019 after leaving Atos. The name is a statement: Cornelius argues that the jiu-jitsu now produced in the United States — often by coaches with heavy wrestling backgrounds — has become its own style, and the academy’s schedule reflects that, with wrestling and no-gi sessions alongside traditional gi classes.

It’s also one of the largest jiu-jitsu facilities in San Diego, with roughly 6,000 square feet of mats, and it has built one of the biggest and most enthusiastic review bases of any martial arts school in the country. Crucially for newcomers, Legion runs a progressive beginners’ program that walks students through the fundamentals over several weeks, so first-timers aren’t thrown straight into rounds with elite competitors. Kids’ classes, a competition team and even a parents’ class round out a schedule that runs from early morning to late evening.

Best for

Beginners who want a structured on-ramp, serious competitors who want elite training partners, and families training together.

Good to know

Legion has hosted weekend open mats that are popular with visiting grapplers. It’s on Miramar Road in the Mira Mesa area, near MCAS Miramar.
