Why it made the list
Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria is the reason many San Diegans know birria at all. The owner has said that when he opened around 2005, there were no birria restaurants in San Diego, so he brought the Tijuana morning tradition north. Yelp’s computers later ranked it the No. 1 taco spot in the country, and it still holds a near-perfect review record across thousands of reviews. The specialty is beef birria, including a version with nervio (tendon), served as tacos, quesataco, tortas or plates, always with consommé for dipping.

Birria purists, early risers and anyone who wants to taste where San Diego’s birria wave began.
Good to know
It’s on Flower Avenue in Otay Mesa–Nestor, about a mile north of the border. Birria is a morning dish here: the restaurant opens early and closes in the afternoon, so go before lunch. Menudo is a weekend special.
