San Diego Holiday Lights Guide 2026: December Nights, Parade of Lights and More
San Diego’s holiday season packs a lot into a few weeks: the free December Nights festival in Balboa Park, a parade of lit-up boats on San Diego Bay, ice skating steps from the sand, and light displays across the county. This guide covers the best holiday lights and events for 2026, what’s free, and how to beat the crowds.

December Nights in Balboa Park
December Nights is San Diego’s biggest free holiday festival. Balboa Park’s Spanish Revival buildings glow with lights, stages host music and dance, and food from around the world lines El Prado. It’s usually held on the first Friday and Saturday of December, which points to December 4 and 5, 2026. Confirm at balboapark.org. Many museums stay open late with free or reduced entry. See our ranking of the best museums in San Diego to plan which to visit.
Tips: take a free shuttle or the trolley instead of driving (parking fills fast), arrive near opening time, and eat beforehand in Bankers Hill or North Park.
San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

Dozens of decorated boats cruise San Diego Bay on two Sunday evenings in mid-December. Watching is free from the shore: Shelter Island in Point Loma, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero downtown and the Ferry Landing in Coronado are all good viewing spots. Bring a blanket, it gets chilly on the water.
Ice skating by the beach

Where else can you ice skate next to the ocean? Coronado’s seasonal beachside rink at the Hotel del Coronado usually opens in late November and runs into early January. Tickets sell out on weekends, so book early and go at sunset.
More holiday lights worth the trip
- Garden of Lights at the San Diego Botanic Garden (Encinitas): a ticketed walk through gardens lit with hundreds of thousands of lights. Afterwards, explore the best of Encinitas.
- Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo: select evenings in December with lights and holiday activities (zoo admission required).
- Old Town: the historic plaza decorates for the season, and evenings there are festive and walkable. See the best of Old Town.
Dates and prices change every year, so check each event’s website before you go.
